History of Nelson, British Columbia

In 1867, gold and silver were found in the area and Nelson grew quickly as a result of the mining activity. Dozens of other mining communities sprang up along Kootenay Lake, two railways were routed through Nelson. In the early 1980s, Nelson suffered a devastating economic downturn when the local Kootenay Forest Products sawmill was closed. Nelson was incorporated as a city in 1897.

Nelson has four distinct seasons. Average minimum and maximum temperatures vary from -5°C to 5°C in winter, 15°C to 27°C in the summer. Rainfall averages around 25 mm a month March through October. Snowfall occurs November through March with December and January averaging 70 cm each month.
